Workshop task
Bench power supply testing with the Rigol DS1054Z
Task: check how a bench supply behaves at startup, during load changes and when more than one output or circuit section is active.
Measure startup behaviour
Trigger on the rising edge of the output rail and capture the startup. Look for overshoot, slow rise time, ringing or dropout. This matters when a circuit has processors, sensors or analogue stages that expect controlled power sequencing.
Check load response
Switch a known load on and off while watching the output rail. The DS1054Z can show whether the rail dips below the circuit's safe operating range or produces a transient that could cause resets and measurement errors.
Compare rails together
With four channels, you can watch several rails or supply points at once. This is useful when one rail powers logic, another powers analogue circuitry, and a third powers a load such as a motor or LED array.
What you get out of it
You can verify that the supply behaves properly in the moments where a simple voltage reading is least informative: startup, switching and load changes.
